Tucker Carlson Update: The CIA Read His Texts and Now the DOJ May Charge Him. This Changes Things.

Last week we published a piece asking a simple question: Who is Tucker Carlson, Really?

We laid out the documented facts. His father ran Voice of America, the US government's foreign propaganda broadcasting arm. Tucker himself applied to the CIA and rejected. He entered media on his father's advice. We raised the controlled opposition theory as a framework worth examining.

On March 14, Tucker Carlson posted a five-minute video to X and blew the whole thing open. The CIA has been reading his texts. The Agency is preparing a criminal referral to the DOJ. The charge being considered: violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). The alleged crime: communicating with Iranians before the war started.

This forces us to revisit everything we wrote, because it cuts both ways.

What He Actually Said

Carlson's claims, in his own words:

The CIA read his private text messages in the lead-up to the Iran war. Based on those texts the Agency is preparing a criminal referral to the DOJ under FARA. He does not expect charges to stick because he claims he is not an agent of a foreign power, he has never taken money from a foreign government, and as an American citizen he is legally entitled to speak with anyone he chooses.

But he brought it public for a reason. He offered three explanations for why the intelligence community might be doing this.

• First: wartime governments become more authoritarian and less tolerant of dissent

• Second: people inside the CIA are "mad at him" for his views on Israel, and using the FARA process to justify surveillance warrants.

• Third: the intelligence community leaks these referrals to humiliate and terrify its enemies, whether or not charges ever materialize.

All three of those things have documented historical precedent. None of them are conspiracy theory.

How This Complicates the Controlled Opposition

In our original piece, we raised the possibility that Carlson's media career, the son of a Voice of America director who applied to the CIA and was pointed toward journalism instead, could be consistent with a controlled opposition operation. A controlled truth-teller who reveals enough real things to build audience trust while keeping the most dangerous threads buried.

This new development cuts directly against that theory. You do not surveil your own assets and prepare criminal referrals against them. If Carlson were controlled opposition this is not how those relationships end. They end quietly, with the asset gradually losing relevance, not with a public FARA referral and presidential excommunication.

BUT...if we wanted to double down on the theory...the persecution itself is the point.

Nothing builds credibility with a skeptical, institutionally distrustful audience faster than watching someone get targeted by the CIA for saying things the CIA doesn't like. If you wanted to make a controlled opposition operation maximally effective in 2026, having your asset publicly persecuted by the intelligence community would be the cleanest way to do it.

We are not asserting this is what is happening. We are noting that both interpretations remain structurally possible. That is the nature of a well-run operation, it is designed to be indistinguishable from the real thing.

The Part Nobody in Mainstream Media Is Saying

The CIA is reading the private communications of an American journalist. Not a spy. Not a terrorist. A media figure. They are doing this, by Carlson's own account and by the logic of the process he described, because he talked to people in a country the US was about to bomb, and because his views on Israel made him enemies inside the intelligence community.

If this were Rachel Maddow, it would be the only story on cable news for a week. There would be Senate hearings. There would be bipartisan outrage about the surveillance state targeting journalists.

Because it's Tucker Carlson, the people who would normally defend press freedom are quietly satisfied. That is exactly how the government wins. They pick the target nobody will defend. They test the precedent on the person the other side hates. And then, later, they use the same tools on someone you care about.

You do not have to like Tucker Carlson to understand that the CIA surveilling and filing criminal referrals against journalists for talking to people in enemy countries is a foundational threat to press freedom. The principle either holds for everyone or it holds for no one.

Where This Leaves Us

We still do not know who Tucker Carlson really is. The documented facts from our original piece remain documented.

What we know now that we did not know last week: the CIA is treating him like an enemy. The president has publicly cut him loose. And the intelligence community is using its surveillance infrastructure against him for the stated reason that he has the wrong views about Israel.

None of that proves he is a genuine independent journalist being persecuted for telling the truth. None of it proves he is a controlled opposition being made to look that way. What it proves is that the machinery of the American surveillance state is now being deployed against a journalist for his communications and his editorial positions.

That should bother you regardless of what you think of Tucker Carlson.
